Southern Grounds Landscape Management

Mulching

Pine straw is the mulch of choice for ornamental shrub beds and natural areas in our area. Pine bark mulch has also become very popular as well. Both benefit shrub beds by helping to retain moisture, control weeds, prevent erosion, protect from temperature extremes and to improve the appearance of your bed areas. This classification of work is critical to the overall success of our complete maintenance program.

Let Southern Grounds Help You:

Mulch installation will include the following:

Delivery of mulch, establishing a vertical trench to define the bed area, installation of mulch, remove mulch from foliage of plants, clean up and removal of debris from installation process. Pine straw is spread to a thickness of 3-4” layer. Mulch is installed to a 2-3” thickness. All areas will be blown clean from installation.

Pine straw and mulch must be replenished a minimum of one time per year for our maintenance process to work as designed. Pine straw that is located in a full sun exposure with frequent irrigation will deteriorate much more quickly than that in natural shaded areas without irrigation. If your pine straw begins to look thin or its color does not look good, please contact our office staff about our mulch service.

Key Benefits of Mulching

Mulching is essential to the survival of your landscape during a drought. Mulch will reduce the amount of water that evaporates from your soil, greatly reducing your need to water your plants.

  • Improves the quality of your soil
  • Acts like an insulating later on top or your soil, keeping it cooler during hot summer months
  • Mulch helps keep the weeds down
  • Reduces the amount of water that evaporates your soil, so your plants and flowers will have more water for longer amounts of time
